Growth and motor development: observing over time
Three illustrated explanations on following growth, offering opportunities to move and discussing concerns with the paediatrician.
The pattern over time matters
One measurement or a comparison with another child is not enough to assess growth. The paediatrician interprets measurements over time alongside the child's history and examination.
Moving in a safe environment
Offer age-appropriate opportunities to play and move. For an infant, tummy time is an awake activity on a safe floor surface, with an adult nearby providing supervision.
Discuss concerns with the paediatrician
Speak with the paediatrician if you notice movement difficulties, marked asymmetry or loss of previously acquired skills. Explain what has changed and when, rather than waiting for the child to grow out of it.
