A child in a cast: protection and warning signs
An illustrated guide to cast precautions and signs needing review. Follow the instructions given for weight-bearing, hygiene and removal.

Protect the cast
Keep it dry as instructed. Do not insert objects, cut it or modify it yourself.

Loading and activity are individual
Follow instructions for weight-bearing, school and movement. Less pain does not authorise removing the immobilisation.

Signs that should not wait
Cold, pale or blue fingers or toes, numbness, loss of movement or severe pain need urgent assessment.
Illustrations and general information for families. They do not replace an individual medical assessment or instructions from the treating team.
